I've installed a lot of custom portraits, and somehow, the files that hold the hair models for blank portraits got messed up. hair doesn't show up at all on non-portraits (it occasionally shows up with the 'bunny ears' fuzz or just random noise glitches).

Is it possible to fix this without having to start over again (or is there a way where I can mass import all my custom portraits back in without having to do them all one by one over again?

I can post a screenshot if needed of what happened.

It sounds as if you may have replaced a spot within the file that contains the hair. I believe that all the different features of the graphical face IDs are within the same .dat file as the portraits.

I've only replaced stuff over old portraits, never over any hair files.I think it just must be corrupted. I'm probably using an older process that's not as top-of-the-line as can be done.

I'm using the UPDATED.EXE (Dat Editor Extreme), loading up the UIS_LIB_PLAYER_PORT.dat, finding an unused portrait ID (through that nifty spreadsheet you posted a while back), loading a .dds file, importing, then saving when I"m done.

I've imported a ton (Probably 600+) files and normally do them in chunks of 20 or so. So I've done a lot of saving and loading.

Do you know which ones in the .dat are the hair files? I'm going to see if extracting them (Which I don't really know how to do ) from a clean dat over to my corrupted one if that'd solve the problem. I think it should.

The better way would be to update a group (say 100-200) then use the DATFileReplacer (DFR) to extract them. Then do another group and so on until you get all of them in there. Then use the DFR to import them into the .dat file. Like what we did with the mod. I think there we replaced close to 1000 portraits w/o any problem.

Sigh.. Another tool to learn how to use.

Do you have more detailed instructions for that process?

Not really. Read the instructions and/or read me files for each program. Rexpage, JD, packfan, and those guys are pretty good w/ keeping things as simple as possible. It actually sounds a lot worse than it is.

A note for anyone reading: When using the Dat editor to extract graphics, if you hit "Extract all" make sure the file your extracting from is in a nice folder, and not just on your desktop, so you don't have to deal with all 2846 icons like I just did.

Finally. After extracting portraits 2400 through the rest of them from the game CD & importing them back into my corrupted .DAT, I have solved the problem.

I actually had to use both the Dat file raplacer and the Dat editor for this, since it didn't fully work the first time around.
